What is NSFAS?
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a South African government bursary that covers tuition, accommodation, meals, and learning materials for qualifying students at public universities and TVET colleges.
The accommodation allowance is paid directly to your accredited landlord — you don't need to manage the money yourself.
NSFAS Eligibility Requirements
- South African citizen or permanent resident
- Household income below R350,000 per year
- Registered at a public higher education institution (TVET or university)
- Accommodation must be in an NSFAS-accredited property
- Lease agreement submitted through NSFAS iEnablement portal
For Students: How to Use Your NSFAS Allowance
Apply for NSFAS Funding
Apply at myNSFAS.nsfas.org.za before the annual closing date (usually March). First-year students apply through the National Benchmark Test portal.
Search for NSFAS Properties
On Student Home, filter by "NSFAS Accredited Only" to see properties eligible for NSFAS allowances in your city.
Apply for a Room
Submit your application through Student Home. Include your NSFAS approval letter in your document uploads.
NSFAS Pays the Owner
Once approved, NSFAS pays the property owner directly via the iEnablement system. You don't pay out of pocket.
For Property Owners: Getting NSFAS Accredited
Accreditation allows you to accept NSFAS students and receive guaranteed government payments.

Apply to NSFAS
Submit your accreditation application through the NSFAS iEnablement portal (nsfas.org.za). Student Home provides a verification letter to support your application.
Receive Your Accreditation
NSFAS inspects your property and issues a certificate. Processing typically takes 4–8 weeks.
Start Accepting NSFAS Students
Your listing is tagged as NSFAS Accredited. Students with NSFAS funding can now apply and NSFAS will pay your invoices directly.
